Arizona's booming economy created more than 300,000 new jobs last year, according to a new employment report released recently by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity. The Phoenix metro area added a total of 66,500 non-agricultural jobs in the first half of 2016, an increase of 1,200 jobs from the same period last year and an all-time high.

The leading sectors for employment growth were agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, construction and mining, retail and wholesale trade, retail trade and services, and information technology.

Greater Phoenix led the nation in the number of new jobs created last year, and Arizona's GDP growth outpaced that of 46 other states, including New York, California, Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Wisconsin. Arizona also led all nations in job growth, ranking fourth in job growth among states with booming economies, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Currently, Pima Community College's Aviation Center has about 150 students a year and will be able to train up to 250 students in an expanded program to expand the technical talent pipeline in Tucson. It also recently partnered with Arizona State University to adopt a common curriculum for its automation of automated vehicle systems program to better serve manufacturing employers in the Tucson region. Other innovative programs include a $1.5 million grant from the US Department of Education's National Science Foundation to announce the launch of a pilot program for a Tucson company that makes self-driving trucks.
